The cats are housed in a free roaming room "Kitty City" and it's attached cattery, a fully enclosed outdoor space where they can soak up the sun, enjoy the fresh air, and watch the birds and butterflies that visit the garden next to the cattery. The dogs roam about the Center and Boutique, nap in the comfortable enclosures of "Elona's Dog Lounge", or romp with friends in the Doggy Play Yard. The dogs stay at the Center only during hours of operation. Every night and during weekends, when the Center is closed, the dogs go home with foster families.
The AAC can also assist qualified prospective adopters in their search for a specific breed or type of animal compatible with their lifestyle through networking with other rescue groups and animal welfare organizations. This provides another opportunity for the public to adopt rather than purchase a pet. Last but not least, the AAC is here to educate people on how to stop the killing of adoptable pets. Of the 68 million owned dogs and 73 million owned cats in the US, only 20% have been adopted!! Yet every hour in US shelters 480 adoptable animals are put to death. Clearly, there ARE enough homes! We are here to shatter the many negative stereotypes about abandoned animals, encourage and help people to choose to ADOPT instead of buying a pet, and to educate people as to the immense importance of SPAYING AND NEUTERING their pets, and the many other responsibilities of pet ownership. Together we hope to put an end to the killing of adoptable animals, and envision a future where there are no more homeless pets. |
