How to Teach an Old Dog New Tricks and others
by Ian Dunbar
A classic, easy to read and understand how-to dog training book.
The dog training community owes much to Dr. Ian Dunbar, who has been teaching pet owners to train their dogs humanely and thoroughly for over 30 years.
In 1981 Dr. Dunbar developed SIRIUS puppy training, which redefined and revolutionized dog training. Before SIRIUS there were no puppy classes, and virtually no food lures and rewards in training. Arguably the single most significant figure in the philosphical changes brought to dog training, Dr. Dunbar helped the dog training community change from the forceful techniques based on punishment and fear to the present day "dog-friendly", positive tactics. The SIRIUS methods have been adopted and adapted by most caring dog trainers worldwide.
Dr. Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian, animal behaviorist, and dog trainer. A columnist, the star of the British television show Dogs With Dunbar, and author, he has written numerous books about puppy/dog behavior and training, all of which are highly recommended and include Before You Get Your Puppy, After Getting Your Puppy (both one the Top Ten list of Recommended Books for Owners by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers), Doctor Dunbar's Good Little Dog Book, and Dog Behavior: An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
His topic-specific publications regarding such subjects as Aggression, Barking, Fighting, Fear, Socialzing, Digging, Chewing, and Housetraining.
(He also hosts numerous videos - see below!)
He received his veterinary degree and a Special Honors degree in Physiology & Biochemistry from the Royal Veterinary College (London University) and a doctorate in animal behavior from the University of California in Berkeley.
He is the founder of many dog-training organizations, including the Center for Applied Animal Behavior; the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the largest and most influential worldwide association of professional dog trainers; and Sirius Puppy Training, the leading provider of puppy classes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Culture Clash
by Jean Donaldson
The Culture Clash explains natural dog behavior and what dogs need; how it tends to conflict with what people desire; and what we as people can do about it.
The Culture Clash won the Best Behavior Book of 1997 from the Dog Writers Association of America and is the #1 book recommendation for dog owners from the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
Her other books (also recommended) include Dogs are From Neptune (also one of the Top Ten Recommended Books for Owners by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers); FIGHT! A Guide to Dog-Dog Aggression; and MINE! A Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs, which won the Best Behavior Book from the Dog Writers Association for the year 2002.
Jean Donaldson is highly esteemed in the dog training community, with over thirty years of experience in dog behavior and training. She founded the first positive reinforcement school and counseling service in Montreal, Canada called Renaissance Dog Training. In 1999 she joined the San Francisco SPCA, and is the Director of the Academy for Dog Trainers. Ms. Donaldson established the Academy with the intent of improving public education about a dog's quality of life, and prevention of relinquishments to animal shelters for behavior reasons. Until Ms. Donaldson spearheaded the creation of the Academy for Dog Trainers, there was no similar comprehensive program that educated people on how to become dog trainers and behavior counselors. The SF/SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers has gained a reputation as the Harvard of dog training schools.

The Other End of the Leash
by Patricia McConnell
The main focus of Other End of the Leash is dog language. While it's certainly not a training manual, it offers valuable insights into dog-human communication - and why it is important. What are we telling our dogs inadvertantly, and teaching them unintentionally? This book focuses on how dog owners can learn "the language" of dogs by recognizing important signals and reading them correctly in order to help dogs be better behaved and help dog owners to be better handlers. This book is a fascinating exploration into the differences between the visual signals of dogs and humans, and is one of the Top Ten Books recommended for dog owners from the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.
Patricia McConnell is an Animal Behavioralist who is highly respected in the dog training community.
Her latest book is For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend, a combination of stories, science and practical advice to show how understanding emotions in both people and dogs can improve owners' relationships with their pets.
Dr. McConnell also has several topic-specific publications such as Feisty Fido (regarding leash aggresive dogs), I'll Be Home Soon (about separation anxiety), Cautious Canine (fearful dogs), Way to Go! (a guide to housetraining), Feeling Outnumbered? (about living in a multi-dog household), How to Be the Leader of the Pack and Have Your Dog Love You For It (about being a benevolent leader), and the Fastidious Feline (about litterbox issues in cats).
Dr. Patricia McConnell is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, and received her Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison researching dog behavior and communication between professional trainers and working domestic animals. She is currently the owner of Dog's Best Friend Ltd., which specializes in family dog-training and treating aggression in dogs, and Adjunct Associate Professor in Zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching "The Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships."
Co-host of Wisconsin Public Radio's "Calling All Pets," Dr. McConnell gives advice about behavior problems on over 100 radio stations across the country. She is the behavior columnist for the BARk magazine ("the New Yorker of Dog Magazines") and a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Comparative Psychology. She is the author of the much acclaimed book "The Other End of the Leash," as well as a highly respected series of booklets on the treatment of behavioral problems. McConnell is a sought after seminar speaker, giving seminars and speeches about canine and feline behavior around the world.

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals
by Turid Rugaas
This is a fascinating book about dog language, about the wide range of subtle signals that dogs use to communicate "please calm down" towards other dogs - or their owners - and the signals that our own pets send to us daily. You'll likely not look at your dog - or any dog - the same way again after reading this book. One of the Top Ten Books recommended for dog owners from the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

The Norwegian dog trainer has worked with dogs for many years and studied the body language of dogs for more than a decade. And Turid Rugaas is now one of the world's leading experts on dog behavior.
Turid lives and works in Norway where she owns and runs a dog training school, Hagen Hundeskole. Being a popular speaker, she is spending more time abroad than at home, speaking and presenting programs at conferences, seminars and workshops.

Getting in Touch with Your Dog: A Gentle Approach to Influencing Behavior, Health, and Performance
by Linda Tellington
Yet another way in which to improve not only your relationship with your pet, but also it's health and behavior. Recommended by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Try it!
Animal bodywork expert Linda Tellington-Jones developed the Tellington Touch Method (TTouch) throughout her 40-year career working with animals as a way to effectively influence behavior and character, as well as their ability to learn. T Touch enforces mutual respect between dog and owner, stressing a relationship based on appreciation and friendship rather than dominance and submission.
The Tellington Method utilizes a variety of techniques of touch, movement and body language to affect behavior, performance, and health, and to increase an animal’s willingness and ability to learn in a painless and anxiety-free environment.
Linda’s pioneering work and highly effective and revolutionary approach to working with animals brought her world wide recognition.
As an internationally acclaimed authority on animal behavior, training and healing, Linda has given presentations and demonstrations on her TTEAM method at veterinary conferences, universities, equestrian expositions, North American Handicapped Riding Association and the Delta Society world conferences, therapeutic riding associations, Olympic training centers, wildlife rehabilitation conferences, and zoos throughout the world.
Through her non-profit organization, Animal Ambassadors, she supports projects of children working with animals to enhance understanding, compassion and quality of life for both humans and animals.
Linda has also written eleven books about TTouch and TTEAM which have been printed in twelve languages.
