How to Adopt

Anyone interested in adopting a pet from the Animal Adoption Center is encouraged to give much thought and consideration into making this big decision. An animal can require a commitment of 10 to 20 years, and welcoming any animal into your life is not a choice to be taken lightly. Of course, sharing your life with an animal can be a wonderful experience, especially if the pet is well-matched to your lifestyle and you are prepared for such an addition.

It is our mission to find permanent, safe, and loving homes for abandoned companion animals, and we believe it very important to therefore match the right animal with the right family. We do not do on-the-spot adoptions. Anyone interested in an animal is required to foster prior to adoption, and is welcome to do so for up to 2 weeks, to see how the animal settles into their life and family. This has proved very effective in helping prospective adopters decide is this animal is the one for them - or if they even want an animal at all. Thanks to this time span, a family has time to consider and decide if they are willing to make what is a lifetime commitment. Upon deciding to adopt, individuals or families must apply and have an adoption application reviewed, an interview, be willing to undergo a home visit, and pay an adoption fee. Not all applicants qualify to adopt. Adoption fees range from $60 and up, depending on the animal and the level of medical care and transportation costs.

We DO adopt out of area. We welcome out-of-area adopters, but please be aware we do require prospective adopters to come to our facility and meet the animal - with any other pets - in person, as well as foster for a minimum of two nights in the area. We will not ship animals. Before you make the trip we encourage you to fill out an adoption application and submit it, and then talk with staff, to be sure you will qualify to adopt. Due to our limited staff, we cannot answer any questions about individual animals via email until we have received your adoption application. Adoption applications can be downloaded from our website, or you can email us and we will send you one. Be sure to title your email "Adoption application request"!! They can be submitted electronically to or faxed to 307 739 2309. We cannot "hold" any animal, and have a "first qualified and well matched adopter gets the animal" policy as well.

Don't see what you would like online or at the Center? We will be more than happy to help you find whatever you are looking for. Sign up on our "Want to Adopt" list and we can put you in touch with regional shelters and rescue groups who just may have the pet for you!
