How to Adopt

A pet can be a wonderful, life-enhancing creature if you are ready and choose wisely! Assuming you have given it some thought and indeed are ready (see Are You Ready for a Pet), choosing the right pet - both the type and the individual - is also a big decision and not to be taken lightly. There are many types of pets. All require commitment, some far more so than others! There are dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, ferrets, and small and furry creatures like gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs. Don't forget horses, livestock like goats and sheep, and potbellied pigs, as well as fish and reptiles, too.

All make wonderful pets in certain situations, and can be a source of enjoyment for many years. Some things to consider to help you determine what may be the best choice for you:
-What are your expectations for a pet?
-How much time and energy are you willing and actually able to devote to a pet?
-What is your financial situation?
-What is your housing situation?
-What is your activity level?
-Do you have family and kids?
-What kind of routine do you have?
-What do you like to do when you are not working?
-What level of future commitment are you willing to make?

So consider carefully, and once you've chosen - there is stil more homework to be done! Each of these types of animals come in a variety of breeds. ALL are available in rescue. Originating for a variety of purposes, these breeds are suitable to different lifestyles, and have varying requirements. In dogs alone, there are extreme differences in temperament, energy levels, age, size and coat. Breed books and breed rescues are great sources of information. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask us at the Animal Adoption Center. We'll be happy to point you in the right direction to help you find that perfect pet!
